The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a high-severity security alert for smartphones, laptops, smart TVs, tablets, Wi-Fi routers, and other smart home devices using MediaTek chips. According to a report by Moneycontrol, this alert (CIVN-2025-0119) states that critical vulnerabilities have been found in MediaTek chips, which could allow hackers to gain unauthorized access to devices, stealing data. The warning was issued on June 12, 2025, and users are advised to update their devices immediately.

What’s wrong with MediaTek chips?

According to CERT-In’s advisory, the vulnerabilities found in MediaTek chips could allow hackers to access the device and cause a denial-of-service. This means that hackers could steal data from your device, gain unauthorized access, or render the device completely unusable. The flaw has been found in MediaTek’s connectivity, Wi-Fi SoC, and Dimensity/Helio series processors, which are used in smartphones, laptops, smart TVs, tablets, routers, and smart home devices.

This security breach can affect all those who use devices with MediaTek chips. This includes smartphones, laptops, smart TVs, tablets, Wi-Fi routers, and smart home devices. Especially those users are at greater risk who do not update their devices regularly.

What to do immediately?

CERT-In has advised users to update their devices immediately. First, go to your device’s settings and check for “Software Update” or “Firmware Update”. MediaTek and device manufacturers have released patches to fix this vulnerability, which are available for download. Make sure to back up your data before updating. If the update is not available, visit the device manufacturer’s website and check the support section. Also, avoid clicking on unknown links and downloading suspicious apps, as hackers can take advantage of this vulnerability.
