A joke played by his friend proved costly for a student named Aditya Verma. Because of this joke the student had to go to jail in Spain. A case is going on against him, in which he may also have to pay a fine. Actually, this matter is of July 2022, which has now come to light and has been in discussion for the last few days.
Verma had gone on a trip to Menorca, an island in Spain, with his friends. According to reports, before taking off from Gatwick Airport, he had messaged his friend, ‘I am going to blow up the plane (I am a member of the Taliban)’. This message of Aditya was intercepted by the airport WiFi network and immediately informed the security agencies.
In response, the Spanish Air Force deployed two F-18 jets behind the plane. After the flight landed in Menorca, it was thoroughly inspected. Aditya was 18 years old at that time, so he was arrested.
How was Verma’s message intercepted?
Now the question arises that how did the security agencies come to know about Verma’s message. The reason for this is the airport Wi-Fi Is. This message was sent using the Wi-Fi network from Gatwick Airport. The Wi-Fi network at the airport is free and it is public.
Many keywords on such public networks are kept as red flags for security reasons. It is possible that in the message sent by Aditya, keywords like Taliban and Blow up plane may have been detected as a risk in the system and immediately informed about it. After this, the airport authority informed the security agencies about this possible threat and then we know the further story.
Is Snapchat encrypted?
It is also worth noting here that end-to-end encryption is available on Snapchat, but it is not complete. The videos and photos you send on this platform are encrypted. Whereas text and reaction are not encrypted. In such a situation, non-encrypted messages can be easily read.
What happened to the student?
After being caught, Aditya Verma was kept in police custody for two days in Spain. Later he was released on bail. Even after returning to Britain, he had to face the British Intelligence agencies. He told the court that this message was just a joke. However, the court has not yet given its verdict in this matter.
Terrorist charges have not been imposed on Aditya, but a case is going on against him along with other charges. If he is found guilty in this case, he may be fined 22,500 Euros (approximately Rs 20 lakh). At the same time, the Defense Ministry of Spain also wants 95 thousand euros (about Rs 80 lakh), which have been spent in this case.
