FIR case:
On January 3, during a mass wedding ceremony in Jamnagar, Imran Pratapgarhi presented a poem, whose video was shared on social media. In connection with this video, the Gujarat Police had registered a case against him under sections 196 and 197 of the Indian Justice Code, alleging that it could spoil social harmony.
Supreme Court response:
The Supreme Court questioned the order to refuse to cancel the FIR by the Gujarat High Court, saying that the High Court did not understand the meaning of the poem properly. The court said, “This is ultimately a poem. It is not against any religion. This poem indirectly states that even if someone is involved in violence, we will not indulge in violence.”
interim relief:
The Supreme Court has stayed the arrest of Pratapgarhi till further orders and issued a notice to the Gujarat government and directed to file a reply in three weeks.
