Microsoft is planning to shut down Skype’s service and focus more on Teams’ service. Announcing this, Microsoft, one of the world’s leading companies, said that the way we communicate has changed. The company said that from instant messaging to video calls, technology has changed the way people connect with each other and it is constantly changing.
Microsoft said that we are going to shut down Skype in May 2025, so that we can focus more on Microsoft Teams, which is being used more for communication these days. Skype was launched in 2003. Teams also provides users with the same features that were in Skype. For example, on Teams, users can take advantage of one-on-one calls, group calls, messaging and file sharing features, which were also available in Skype. Apart from these, users also get some new features in Teams, such as hosting meetings, managing calendars, creating and joining communities for free.
Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available. Over the coming days you can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account to stay connected with all your chats and contacts. Thank you for being part of Skype pic.twitter.com/EZ2wJLOQ1a

Thousands of users around the world already use Teams to help them stay connected at work, school, and home. The amount of time Teams users spend in meetings has increased nearly 4 times over the past two years, showing how important Teams is to everyday communication.
How to migrate from Skype to Teams?
Microsoft said that understanding the demand of the time, we have decided to shut down Skype and improve Teams. We hope that Skype users will be able to log in to Teams easily. Let us tell you how to migrate to Microsoft Teams for free. Microsoft has said that they will gradually allow Skype users to log in to Teams with their Skype account. This change has already started from 28 February 2025. On logging in to Teams, users’ chats and contacts will automatically appear in the app, so that users can continue their old conversations on Skype.
During this transition period, Teams and Skype users will be able to call and chat with each other, so users can stay connected regardless of which platform they’re on.
If users don’t want to migrate from Skype to Teams, they can export their data – such as chats, contacts, and call history.
Skype will be available until May 5, 2025, giving you time to get to know Teams and decide which option is best for you.
How to get started in Teams for free
- Users can also access Teams using Skype. For this, you have to follow the steps given below:
- For this, first of all, you have to download Teams on your device.
- You will need to log into Skype with your user ID and password.
- After that you will be able to use Teams, where your old Skype chats and contacts will already be available.
Changes to Skype’s paid features
Microsoft has said that from now on we will not provide paid services to new Skype users, such as Skype Credit and subscriptions, which are for making international and domestic calls. Existing users of Skype subscription can use their Skype Credit and subscriptions until they start using Teams. Skype users can also use their remaining Skype Credit. However, after May 5, 2025, Skype Dial Pad will be available only in the Skype web portal and Teams.
